Mid-century classic furniture promotion and operation for more than 20 years

"Alex mentioned YMS to me in April or May of last year, and in December, he came to me with the plans and said, 'Let's recreate the story of the U.S. Army in the 1950's,'" Jacky Hsu says, recalling the excitement of this ingenious collaboration. At the time, my furniture store, MCM, was preparing to represent Herman Miller," Jacky Hsu recalls with excitement as he remembers the opportunity to work with Herman Miller, an icon of classic American design furniture, and the fateful arrangement that led to Jacky's story with YMS.

"I think it was right for YMS to hire Alex because he identified 'Mid-Century Modern', which matches the qualities of the former U.S. military dormitory site in Yangmingshan," said Jacky. Jacky pointed out that the building where YMS is located carries the historical memories of the U.S. military stationed in Taiwan in the 1950s and 1960s, and Mid-Century Modern is the best expression of the spirit of this era. "The Mid-Century Modern style emphasizes simple lines, functionality, and openness, and is both pure and classic. It has been carried over from that era to the present day and still has a timeless appeal." Jacky analyzes the core values of contemporary American design.

Jacky, a furniture configurator, brings his in-depth knowledge and experience of classic furniture to the creation of YMS. What we're doing is reimagining the architecture, design, colors and interiors of mid-century modern America and reinterpreting them into the architectural space that is YMS by onefifteen," he says. It's a fusion of modern and classic beauty that takes us back in time, but with new life."

Having been in the furniture industry for over 20 years, Jacky Hsu is a passionate player in classic design. Not only is he a fan of heritage furniture brands such as Herman Miller and Knoll, but he also believes that every piece of classic furniture has a story to tell. That's why when he was approached by onefifteen to be a part of YMS by onefifteen, an innovative project that combines a restaurant, gallery and lodging, he didn't hesitate to jump in and infuse every corner of YMS with his understanding of furniture and space.

Jacky emphasized that Mid-Century Modern is not only a design style, but also a microcosm of American culture. At that time, Herman Miller and Knoll furniture was commonplace in the living space of the U.S. military, and the LCW chair from the Eames collection was even more iconic. "We hope that through these furniture pieces, YMS by onefifteen on Yangmingshan will bring the atmosphere of a 1950s sunny town in the United States," Jacky said. Jacky says, "The accommodations on Yangmingshan are converted from former U.S. Army dormitories, and YMS is the first commercial space in Taiwan to feature a full range of Herman Miller and Knoll furniture. I hope that the consumers who come here can feel the story of the era that we want to convey, and even if they are not familiar with Herman Miller or Eames, they can still be infected by the atmosphere. It's an accomplishment for me to be able to introduce the classic aesthetics to a wider audience," he says.

Jacky's insistence on MCM is reflected in the design of each space's contents, and he talks about how, from the first day he took over the YMS project, the planning of each building and the selection of furniture went through many discussions and adjustments. "Not only did he choose furniture that matched the style of the time, but he also considered the material and color palette. For example, in the U.S., dark teak and walnut were the main colors, but we chose some light-colored furniture to add layers and avoid monotony," Jacky shares his thoughts on each detail. Jacky shares his obsession with conveying a story in every detail, from the exterior of the building to the interior furnishings, every piece of furniture, every lamp.

Furniture is not just an object, it's an aesthetic transmission.

Jacky believes that furniture is the soul of a space. He shares, "Many people are willing to spend a lot of money on decorating, but they just mix and match the furniture, and as a result, the whole ambience loses its soul". In his projects at YMS, he strives to convey the soul and aesthetic value of classic design through furniture.

Speaking about the details of choosing classic furniture, he said, "A good chair not only needs to match the style of the era it was designed for, it also needs to be made of wood that matches the material of the time, such as dark teak or walnut, in order to create a true sense of vintage. He also emphasized that the design team of YMS and the founder of Chor Yee Lunch share a passion for classic furniture, and that this tacit understanding and soulmate relationship made the collaboration even smoother.

Making Aesthetics Everyday

As a passionate promoter of classic furniture, Jacky feels fortunate to be a part of YMS by onefifteen, creating unique spaces like never before, and hopes that YMS will not only become a benchmark for classic aesthetics, but also the beginning of something that will affect many more people. He hopes and believes that through projects like YMS, people's understanding of space and furniture will gradually change. From public living environments to personal interiors, aesthetics can become a part of everyday life.

Every detail of YMS has been carefully discussed and selected," he says. "It's not just a case of furniture configuration. "This is no longer just a furniture configuration project, and we hope that every guest who stays at YMS will be able to feel the American style era that we are trying to recreate," he admits.
